Opening: Sunday, August 27, 2006, 16:00

Have you ever taken part in International Tree=20
Climbing Day? Did you know that there is a=20
genetically modified "superweed" resistant to=20
current herbicides such as Roundup? How would you=20
react to the statement "Remember, language is not=20
free?" Have you ever heard of "Public Sculpture=20
Climbing" or the "Tour de Fence"? All of these=20
are projects that have taken form around the=20
server irational.org in recent years.

On August 27, 2006, the Hartware=20
MedienKunstVerein in the PHOENIX Halle Dortmund=20
is opening a unique exhibition project called=20
"The Wonderful World of irational.org.=20
Techniques, Tools, and Events 1996 - 2006". The=20
show will run from August 30 to October 29, 2006.

Irational is a loose grouping of six=20
international net and media artists who came=20
together around the server irational.org, founded=20
by the British net artist Heath Bunting in 1996,=20
going on to make decisive contribution to early=20
net art from the mid-1990s onward. They include=20
Daniel Garcia And=FAjar / Technologies to the=20
People (E), Rachel Baker (GB), Kayle Brandon=20
(GB), Heath Bunting (GB), Minerva Cuevas / Mejor=20
Vida Corporation (MEX) and Marcus Valentine (GB).

With dry humor and minimal aesthetics, irational=20
commented the Internet hype of the mid-to-late=20
1990s, competing with the=20
commercialization-euphoria of the new market by=20
developing its own pseudo-ventures. Net art was=20
immediate during this period, neither needing nor=20
enjoying the safety of a mediating space or=20
instance. This is why irational often hit upon=20
humorless trademark attorneys, who wanted to keep=20
irational from using brand names such as 7-11,=20
American Express, Sainsbury's and Tesco. These=20
encounters, which the exhibition documents=20
extensively, were little more than a prelude to=20
more recent developments in the field of=20
copyright, intellectual property, and brand=20
protection. Heath Bunting was the first net=20
artist to retire in 1997, putting an end to his=20
exclusive work on the net and turning back to=20
more intensive work in public space, which the=20
Internet has become such an important part of=20
today. If the activities of irational during its=20
"net phase" were dedicated to calling virtual=20
boundaries into question, its members now=20
experiment with interrogating and overcoming=20
economic, political, and social boundaries in=20
real space, producing a great deal of comic=20
relief, among other things.

Never before have so many complex and relevant=20
artworks from around irational.org been shown in=20
such a comprehensive exhibition. The goal of the=20
exhibition is to use the media of a large-scale=20
showing, workshops, and a comprehensive=20
documentation to make these artistic-activist=20
pieces more accessible to a general public.

The Hartware MedienKunstVerein, which - like=20
irational - is celebrating its tenth anniversary=20
this year, has received significant funding for=20
this project through the Federal Cultural=20
=46oundation of Germany (Kulturstiftung des Bundes).
