.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Press Contact: Sarah Ryhanen T: 212.966.7745 ext: 15 E: sarah@exitart.org MAT LAIBOWITZ: ONE SEED IN FOUR STAGES In the 36th Street windows of Exit Art March 9 - April 30, 2007 OPENING FRIDAY MARCH 9, 6-9 pm Exit Art presents a new installation by Mat Laibowitz as part of its ongoing ground floor window exhibition series. A large kinetic mechanical sculpture, One One Seed in Four Stages will be visible from 36th Street 24 hours a day and is best viewed at night. Each of four consecutive windows represents a distinct stage in an imagined pseudo-biological process. The series of windows are connected by a traveling illumination unit which alters the content and presentation of the sculpture as it moves. Together the four windows can be read as a visual narration of decay and regeneration. The artist’s work often focuses on the mundane everyday systems and processes which effect our physical and theoretical selves. In One Seed in Four Stages, he investigates the cyclical nature of change and the contrast between organic and mechanical systems. Mat Laibowitz has shown a diverse body of work spanning installation and interactive art, photography, and film at a variety of venues including the Compton Gallery, Longhouse, the MIT Museum, Fellisimo House of Design, McGill, and Eyebeam. As a musician, Mat Laibowitz has performed at the Limelight and at South By Southwest. He currently spends a lot of time at the MIT Media Lab and working as a product designer.
Funded in part by a Director's Grant from the Council for the Arts at MIT. |
