Het project ?Field Work? in SMART Project Space bestaat uit twee parallelle, onderling verbonden trajecten rondom kunst, natuur en ecologie; een tentoonstelling in twee delen en een langlopende discussie. De tentoonstellingen ?Field Work - part 1? en ?Field Work ? part 2? zijn gericht op het bevragen van hedendaagse percepties en opvattingen van natuur.

?Field Work ? part 2? nodigt uit tot het opnieuw overdenken van het onderscheid dat we meestal maken tussen natuur en cultuur. De werken in de tentoonstelling behandelen ieder op hun eigen manier de relatie tussen beide.

?Field Work ? part 1? draaide in het bijzonder om de perceptie van landschap, hoe deze beïnvloed wordt door menselijk ingrijpen in de omgeving en door culturele representaties ? die vaak bevooroordeeld en politiek getint zijn. ?Field Work ? part 2? nodigt uit tot het opnieuw overdenken van het onderscheid tussen natuur en cultuur. De werken in de tentoonstelling behandelen ieder op hun eigen manier de relatie tussen natuur en het door mensen gemaakte.

Mikael Levins fotoserie ´Settling into Nature' toont hoe de industrialisering van een bepaald gebied in Frankrijk het betreffende landschap niet alleen getransformeerd maar ook geruïneerd heeft. De foto´s laten zien hoe de topografie van het landschap door de tijd heen werd bepaald door de wijze waarop het gebruikt werd; daarbij overwegende hoe voorstellen voor herstel de vormgeving van het landschap in de toekomst zouden kunnen bepalen.

Roderick Hietbrinks video-installatie ?Vivarium? is een onderzoek naar de grenzen tussen natuur en de gebouwde omgeving, gezien door de ogen van een Nederlander die in Sydney aankomt. Het verhaal wordt verteld middels de figuur van een jonge botanist. Het werk van architect en kunstenaar Fritz Haeg, dat de transformatie van een typisch Amerikaanse ´grasveld-voortuin´ in een moestuin laat zien in het kader van zijn langlopende project ´Edible Estates´, en dat van Ingo Vetter & Annette Weisser, bestaande uit een interview met de charismatische oprichter van het Detroit Agriculture Network getiteld ´I am Farming Humanity´, draaien allebei om ´urban farming´.

Amy Balkins diashow ´Public Smog´ is een bewerking van het proces waarin haar project ´Public Smog´ tot stand is gekomen, een voortdurend in vorm en van locatie veranderend park in de atmosfeer bestaande uit niet vervuilde lucht. Ook haar pogingen om de atmosfeer te nomineren als UNESCO World Heritage Site zijn in het werk opgenomen.

Rebecca Sakoun toont ´Biotope 4´, een foto van een verlaten, stervende plant in een leegstaand kantoorgebouw.

Servet Koçyiğit?s´Bird Village´, werd opgenomen in Kus Koyu (Vogeldorp) in Turkije. Dit dorp ontleent haar naam aan het feit dat de bewoners vaak met elkaar communiceren door te fluiten als vogels, een communicatievorm die zeer waarschijnlijk werd ontwikkeld vanwege de abrupte hoogteverschillen in het gebied.

Juneau Projects presenteert ´Underneath the Floorboards of the Forest, Empty Space´, een op tekst gebaseerd computerspel waarin de speler uitgenodigd wordt tot het maken van (aan)tekeningen van een reis van het platteland naar de stad. Ze presenteren eveens ´Sewn to the Sky´, een interactieve installatie met muziekinstrumenten, computer en videoprojectie. Door de instrumenten gezamenlijk te bespelen kunnen tentoonstellingsbezoekers de protagonist van het werk door verschillende landschappen laten reizen.

De ´Field Work´ tentoonstellingen zijn verbonden aan een parallel traject waarin ecologie centraal staat. Dit traject bestaat uit een discussie met kunstenaars en curatoren waarin specifieke praktijken bekeken worden vanuit het perspectief van ecologisch denken, waarbij de nadruk ligt op ?strategie? in plaats van ?thematiek?. Deze manier van werken is nauw verbonden met wat feministisch filosofe Lorraine Code aangeeft in haar recente publicatie ?Ecological Thinking ? the politics of epistemic location?. ?ecological thinking is not simply thinking about ecology or about the environment (?). It is a revisioned mode of engagement with knowledge, subjectivity, politics, ethics, science, citizenship, and agency that pervades and reconfigures theory and practice.?

As a two-part exhibition and an ongoing discussion, ?Field Work? conjectures two parallel, interconnected, and yet differently orientated trajectories that encompass art, nature and ecology. The exhibitions ?Field Work - part 1? and ?Field Work ? part 2? address contemporary perceptions and understandings of nature.

?Field Work ? part 2? is a gentle invitation to rethink the distinction most of us make between nature and culture. Each work in the show in its own way deals with the relationship between nature and a man-made environment.

?Field Work ? part 1? looked at contemporary perceptions and understandings of landscape, at how ones perception of landscape may be informed by human transformations of the environment, and by their mediation through artistic depictions and cultural representations ? which are often partial and politically inflected. ?Field Work ? part 2? is a gentle invitation to rethink the distinction most of us make between nature and culture. Each work in the show in its own way deals with the relationship between nature and a man-made environment.

Mikael Levin?s series of photographs ´Settling into Nature´ show not only how industrialization of a particular area in France resulted in the transformation of the landscape over time, but also how it meticulously wrecked it. His photographs document how the landscapes´ topography was shaped over time by its usage, and correlates this with restoration proposals that might shape it in the future.

Roderick Hietbrink?s video installation ?Vivarium? is an oddly pared-back exploration of the borders between nature and the built environment, as processed by a Dutchman arriving in Sydney ? by proxy through the figure of a young female botanist.

Urban farming is addressed in the work of architect / artist Fritz Haeg, whose video documents the process of transforming a front lawn into an edible garden as part of his ongoing project ´Edible Estates´, and that of Ingo Vetter & Annette Weisser, showing an interview with one of the co-founders of the Detroit Agriculture Network called ´I am Farming Humanity´.

Amy Balkin?s slide show ´Public Smog´ narrates the process of working towards the opening of Public Smog, a shifting and fluctuating clean-air park and attempts to nominate the atmosphere as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Rebecca Sakoun shows ´Biotope 4´, a photograph of an abandoned, dying plant in a deserted office space.

Servet Koçyiğit?s video ´Bird Village´ was shot in Kus Koyu (Bird Village) in Turkey, that takes its name from the birdlike whistling that the villagers often use in place of words. Whistled languages are normally found and used in locations with abrupt relief created by difficult mountainous terrain.

Juneau Projects presents ´Underneath the Floorboards of the Forest, Empty Space´, a text-based computer game to visualize written passages describing a series of interlocking environments gradually moving from the countryside to the city, and ´Sewn to the Sky´, an interactive sound and visual performance / installation continuing their exploration of the interfaces between nature and technology.

The exhibitions are connected to a parallel trajectory in which the notion of ecology is the focal point. This parallel trajectory consists of an ongoing discussion with artists and curators, examining particular artistic and curatorial practices from the perspective of ecology, as a strategy rather then a ?thematic?. This is in line with what feminist philosopher Lorraine Code indicates in her recent publication ?Ecological Thinking ? the politics of epistemic location?: ?ecological thinking is not simply thinking about ecology or about the environment (?).
