Medienforum München Art Award 2001
Deadline for receipt of materials:  25 June 2001

Mobile Goals

After an era of land reclamation in virtual space, bought at the price of slavish occupation at the computer work station, real space is returning to the horizon of developers and artists as a relevant parameter of technological innovation. The new generation of multifunctional mobile phones and wireless data transfer via notebooks promises a mobility, which might be achieved by a complete incorporation of miniature telecommunication units.

The new mobility dissolves fixed frames of reference to our world. Mobile telecommunication units enable people – at least in theory – to communicate with one another at any time and place on earth. The model of local points of reference is confronted with a model of unlimited mobility.

The question is, what importance might fixed points of reference (for example, virtual architecture) still have in a future of total mobility?

We are looking for an art project that starts from the experience of real space, examines it and then takes up the question of the location of the fully mobile individual. The media-technological aspect of the submitted works must be clearly discernible. The project may be in any technical medium or form.

Conditions of submission

The award is DM 20.000,--.
By accepting the award, the artist agrees to realize his or her project
with the funds awarded and to present it personally from the 18. – 25.October 2001 in Munich. The artist may decide how to allocate the funds, whether for cost of living, operating expenses (for example, travel), the acquisition of material or services for the creation of the work.
Additional payments will not be granted.
The art project remains in the possession of the artist.

The submission must include:
- Description of the project
- Description of the technological and space requirements for the realization of the project
- Schedule
- Itemized budget
- Curriculum Vitae

Applicants are asked not to submit originals.
Material will only be returned to the sender if specifically requested. As a general rule, submitted materials will be archived at the Medienforum, in the event that, after consultation with the artist, the project is recommended elsewhere.

Deadline for receipt of materials:  25 June 2001
Decision of the jury:    1 July 2001
Presentation of the object:  18 – 25 October 2001
