Sothebys.com and Gotta Have It Collectibles, a Manhattan memorabilia shop, held a two-week online auction of the pop icon's castoffs just in time to coincide with her world tour. The result? A record price for a Madonna costume at auction. Four bidders fought over the diva's beaded Dolce & Gabbana bra worn during "The Girlie Tour," with the winner paying $23,850, far above the item's pre-sale estimate of $7,000 to $9,000. The auction, which ended on Wednesday, took in a total of $205,332. "We are ecstatic with the unprecedented results of this online auction," said Bob Schagrin, Gotta Have It's co-owner. "Bids came from across the United States and around the world. The global interest along with the record prices achieved have further cemented Madonna's place in pop culture history." Other top lots included the black sequined bustier with gold tassels worn by Madonna on the "Who's That Girl" tour, which sold for $20,550 and more than twice its low pre-sale estimate of $10,000, and her handwritten lyrics from "Like A Prayer," which reached $20,000. Also auctioned off was Madonna's MTV Music Video Award for "Express Yourself," for which a bidder forked over $11,500, a relative bargain given the $10,000 to $15,000 estimate. Her original platinum record award for the early hit, "Like A Virgin," soared to $5,175, far exceeding the estimate of $800 to $1,200. Costumes designed by John Galliano or Jean-Paul Gaultier fetched $13,800 and $11,212 respectively, both exceeding their estimates. In all, 94 percent of some 70 lots offered found buyers. Gotta Have It has been buying up Madonna memorabilia for 10 years from collectors or from charities selling Madonna items that had been donated to them, Schagrin said. The shop plans to open a gallery in London in September. Madonna's "Drowned World Tour" opened in Barcelona in June and played shows in London and New York in July.
