Yes. But, he doesn't get it. He speaks as an "American" but the Washington Post describes him as a "British novelist." I take umbrage with him for telling me as a NYer that I cannot critique US foreign policies and that I should be led like a cow to carry my flag and preach some sophomoric patriotism. He quotes Whitman the ultimate shuckster, who understood if you want to get into a conversation with a scammer, you got to learn how to scam. Rushdie does not get this. He as some honorary member of American intelligentsia does not want people to learn to "break things down" and to begin to understand the roots of our current entanglements. No, Rushdie wants the bewilderment to take hold and to get angry. That op-ed piece is a farce.
