Alongside the luxuriant language of bureaucracy and administration, files appear which appear to be more related to poetry or protest, signs of life beyond the firewall. What is generously being bestowed upon you by your new correspondents is a particular range of manifestations of the cultural work emerging on and through the Internet. Over the last few years, artists and others working in this new and developing context have produced a significant body of work. However, enough of the triviality, I have a business proposition. The work you are being sent by email is of sufficient cultural value for it to have a worth within the art market. For the period that artist's use of computer mediated communications has occurred, I and my associates have been keen to acquire such works. The current wave of donation of net-art pieces to you is of course a result of the removal of pages from The Thing and AVANA from Rome's Civic Network. Whilst the causes of this episode are evidently not fortunate, there is no reason why we should not profit by it. First, I must urge you not to delete these works of art as they arrive in you in-boxes (and of course, to be diligent in making back-up copies of them by as many means as you have at your disposal). This material after all is worth money. Secondly, since your attempted repression of the initial works has of course achieved greater public attention and hence value for them, I would like to enquire as to whether your technical staff still possess the original copies of the works taken off-line. In such a case, I would be interested to know whether it would be possible to discreetly purchase them from you. The files I am concerned with would be the original copies of the interview with Doll Yoko removed from The Thing along with its attendant graphic files and the text of 'Lasciate che i Bimbi' removed from AVANA. As well as the actual files, I would of course require guarantees of their provenance, such as evidence of any file creation and modification dates and the ftp session transcripts of their original uploading and eventual removal by your technical staff. Should you be able to provide a signed statement of authenticity, this would of course be reflected in the value of my offer. I trust that you will consider this initial statement of interest with the thoroughness and confidentiality demanded by the situation and that you will relish your new positions as custodians and guardians of the cultural effloresence of the Internet rather than as its censors.
