Signum -- the same folks who brought you "What Ever Happened to the
Cyber Revolution?" -- have announced some changes this spring. Signum
is a webzine and print anthology project covering culture,
independent music/arts/media, the mind, and other stuff we think is
neat (like alternatives to megacorporate consumer culture). The
online 'zine now appears monthly at www.signumpress.com, and adds two
new editors. Editrix Tiffany Lee Brown will also appear on the online
Inkwell Conference panel on 'zines, May 4-18, with Heath Row, Mark
Frauenfelder, and others.
Signum has brought on a new Contributing Editor, Daev 'the Reverend
Hellshaw' Walsh, a Signumial friend since the days of the Fringe Ware
list. Daev is known for skeptically hunting lake monsters on the
Discovery Channel & BBC, writing for the Fortean Times, and
investigating the paranormal in Ireland, as captured in BLATHER
(www.blather.net).
Amy Jarrell is the new Curator for Freezone, an online gallery
featuring artist profiles and digital/digitized artworks, along with
original fiction, poetry, travelogues, and animation. Jarrell is a
photographer and illustrator whose cool, bloglike diary MANGLE DOLL
lives at mangledoll.diaryland.com.
A publicly-accessible online Inkwell Conference panel about 'zines &

Project JXTA started as a research project incubated at Sun
Microsystems, Inc. under the guidance of Bill Joy and Mike Clary, to
address the peer-to-peer space.
Project JXTA addresses the need for an open, generalized protocol that
interoperates with any peer on the network including PCs, servers and
other connected devices.
Philosophy and Vision
Project JXTA has had community involvement from the beginning. At the
start of the project, we outlined some core principles to our development
process.
1.keep it familiar: where practical, use stuff that's standard and has
worked before
2.leverage experts: engage a variety of experts early and often
3.encourage open development: the design, the specs, the code,
and whatever the result is.
And we outlined a vision for the software. Some key components are:
1.promote communication (not isolation) among applications
2.develop administrative commands for peers, peer groups, and
groups of peers in the spirit of UNIX pipes and shells
3.keep the core small and elegant: make an architectural distinction
between core mechanisms and optional policies
4.support multiple platforms and languages, micro devices to
servers
5.address security from the beginning.
An Open Distributed Community
On February 15, at the O'Reilly P2P conference, Bill Joy compared
peer-to-peer computing efforts of today with early instances of UNIX. He
challenged a community of peers at the O'Reilly P2P Conference to tune
in this April for more details about Project JXTA, and for those who share
our vision, to join our efforts. You can review an article about the speech
or watch the speech.
On April 25, Bill opened this Web site to the public during an online
Webcast. It includes specifications, implementations, and the
infrastructure to jump-start collaboration among peers. Stay tuned as the
site and the project evolve.

Background:
Community Networking initiatives are being incubated, are in active
social service and are growing in diverse geographic localities around the
world. Global CN2001 follows along the path of Global CN2000, the first
international community networking conference, held late last year in
Barcelona. Buenos Aires, the 2001 host city, will provide its southern
hemisphere summer setting for a most important sharing of ideas about the
diverse development of local and regional information societies in a
rapidly changing networked global environment.
"The (R)Evolution of Networked Economics" session is being
organized to provide an economic context and understanding of the practical
work that lies ahead for the local sphere: government, the marketplace and
civic organizations, amid the complex reorganization of society brought
about by the new flows and valuation of material resources, human actions,
information exchanges and knowledge building.
Papers are currently being solicited that address the complex
theoretical subject and practical applications of this conference session.
A few rhetorical questions meant to evoke possible responses include:
ß What are potential major trends in economics: globally to locally? What
are potential pro and con effects of increasingly networked economic
relationships in local geographic and social contexts? What are some
projections for economic and social disparities, especially for the inaptly
termed 'digital divide'.
ß What is the outlook for community networking amid evolving economic and
social
restructuring and values? Will community networking become increasingly
fragile or marginalized by dominant commercial market forces and interests?
Do networked communities offer potential opportunities for added value and
vitality?
ß How might e-commerce, local to global information brokerage, community
e-currency, or the ecological economic impacts of tele-technologies and
information exchange, have both ideological influence and pragmatic affect
on societies?
ß Might community networking initiatives serve as 'living laboratories' and
examples for newly evolving and diverse local-global economic processes, or
are such efforts naive?
Submission Guidelines:
Please email paper abstracts of no more than 250 words by May 31st.
Selected submissions will be asked to provide papers of up to 5000 words
by August 31st.
Abstracts:
. Abstracts for papers, digital media, and other forms of participation
should not exceed 400 words (one page). They should include: the session
title, presentation title, author's name, institution, address, telephone,
e- mail and URL. They are to describe clearly the proposed presentation,
paper or activity.
. Please use Arial 11 pt., at 1.5 space, page size A4.
. Abstracts should be e-mailed to Richard Lowenberg rl@radlab.com to be
forwarded (and/or directly to the Congress coordinators
propuestas@globalcn2001.org), indicating the author's last name in the
title of the message. The deadline for receipt of abstracts is May 31,
2001.
The abstracts will be evaluated by the Working Groups' Coordinators, with
the participation of selected researchers and activists in each field. The
Congress Secretariat will communicate the results of the evaluation by
August 31.

The Subtle Technologies Conference is a 4-day multidisciplinary event
that explores the strands and patterns of thought, feeling and culture,
that connect and resonate in the space between art and science.
We hope to provide an immersive conference environment, which encourages
the discussion and development of new concepts and areas of research in
both the arts and sciences, fusing topics that range from quantum
physics to dance.
Some of the many other topics that will be explored during each 50
minute presentation include: artificial intelligence, topology (a field
of mathematics), genetic algorithms for creating music, consciousness,
interactivity, ancient cave inscriptions, brainwaves, sociology,
magnetic fields and alternative computer interfaces.

medium of sound, vision, and an elemental life force. Presented in

Invitation to a Poetic Conference on Globalization
Our purpose is to discuss issues of globalization, of this too-too solid or sullied, and prosaic topic (isn't it?), by means of verse, that is poetry. The term 'conference' itself sounds like anything but poetry, and yet - it seems a due instrument of tempting poetic minds out of their dens, and making them encounter, question, attack, yield to or just learn about their differently equipped fellow-minds. So then, you striking or timid minds, be welcome, and discuss this enormous item called globalization - in verses, even if less tremendously than good Willy did in his day for a stage called Globe - do it this time as an artful, though sophisticated, yet vivid way of non-continence and apprehension, do it in a way, which you think to be your own. Impart your Self to this chance!
The session itself is due to take place in Budapest (Hungary) in the first half of August 2001, as an event of a multilingual festival of poetry. Will you come? But first - contribute! Einladung zu einer dichterischen Konferenz über die Globalisierung
Bei diesem eben angelaufenen, zunächst Hamburgisch-Budapester und Kölnisch Wässer (Donau-Rhein-Nordsee) befahrenden, internationalen Projekt geht es darum, dass sich die Passagiere, ob sie gleich vom Balkan kommen oder aus der Neuen Welt, über die Globalisierung, ihre Erscheinungsformen, Symptome, über die Erfahrungen, die sie mit ihr gemacht haben, unterhalten, und zwar in Versen!: das heißt, so, wie es in alten Tragödien und Komödien zuging. Dieser entfremdete und dennoch pulsierende Ton soll hier lebensnah (all the world is a stage...) nachvollzogen werden, ohne unbedingt mit der Regelmäßigkeit der dramatischen Vorbilder verfahren zu wollen - allerdings auch nicht höflicher, etwa uns selber gegenüber.
Die Sitzung selbst soll in der ersten Hälfte des Monats August 2001 in Budapest stattfinden (im Rahmen eines mehrsprachigen Dichterfestivals). Greetings:
I am writing to invite you to a very special event masterminded by
Victoria Vesna, Chair of Design | Media Arts at UCLA. Victoria has
invited my father, Peter Pearce, and myself, to give back-to-back
lectures as part of her Monday night series. For those who are not
aware, my dad has been involved in architectural and industrial design
since the late 50's. He worked for Charles Eames, and later with
Buckminster Fuller, and is considered one of the world's foremost
experts in space frame structures. His credits include Biosphere 2, the
Navy Pier in Chicago, and the Fremont Street Canopy in Las Vegas, as
well as several books including "Structure in Nature is a Strategy for
Design," which Victoria cites as one of her major influences. He will
discuss his philosopy and approach to high-performance design.
I will follow talk on my philosophy of interactive design and the
aesthetics of interactivity, which will no doubt weave in meditations
and revellations on the mutual continuities, contrasts and and
influences of our work.
The two talks will be followed by a discussion.

The 2001 Sasol exhibition curated by Marcus Neustetter at the Klein Karoo
Nasionale Kunstefees in Oudtshoorn, South Africa, presented a range of South
African artists, each of which showing two works related in subject matter,
however in different media; one work in digital format and the other one of
the more traditional media. In this way the exhibition creates relationships
between artists' works on the screen and off the screen - switch on/off. The
translation of the production of the sculptural, photographic or pictorial
works into either computer specific, digitally manipulated or even
interactive pieces has become interesting in the relationship of art and
technology. Artists such as Norman Catherine and Stephen Hobbs have been
exploring shifts of their concepts to incorporate digital interactivity of
CD Rom artworks. Abrie Fourie translates his lightbox works into
screensavers and Tracy Gander/FUR her landscapes into digital horizons.
Other artists exhibiting transformations from the sculptural, performance
and two-dimensional works into the virtual environment created by technology
are Brad Hammond, Mark Edwards, Robin Rhode, Kim Lieberman and Stefanus
Rademeyer. The digital works were presented on state of the art equipment
sponsored by LG Electronics. Computers and projectors are also supplied by
the Technikon Pretoria and with the assistance of MuseuMAfrica, City of
Johannesburg. A special thank you to the sponsors, KKNK, artists,
collaborators, assistants, Clive van den Berg and Kathryn Smith.

Why a Virtual Sit-In?
- -To support the demand for a Living Wage of $10.25/hr for all Harvard
University employees,
- -To add the sudden invisible weight of our virtual bodies to that of the
flesh bodies of nearly 40 students who have been occupying Harvard
administrative offices for over a week,
- -To send a message to Harvard University that we will not stop until a
Living Wage exists for all Harvard employees,
- -To demonstrate to the University and the Harvard Corporation, and to all
Universities and Corporations, that our power of collective action is
stronger than their power of greed.

TAUTOLOGY is not the same exhibition twice. It exhibits work from =
artists
for whom tautology is a strategy, a visual and conceptual device.
Tautology in this case is not limited to the strictly semantic sense of =
a
repetition in meaning, but it encompasses 'visual tautologies' (favoured
for example by Andy Warhol and Ren=E9 Magritte) and imaginary =
constructions
that rely on duplication or circularity to set up two or more terms with
equivalent meanings. In a rhetorical sense, you could say that =
tautology
is an argument that 'explains' itself by restating itself.
Carlos Bayala uses visual duplication to address questions of visual and
narrative perception. His recent work "Anima" is a four-panelled video
projection depicting farm animals that have been dressed up in painterly
renditions of themselves. By layering two different media, painting and
video, Bayala draws attention to the fact that the horse 'inhabits' its
photograhic image (or videographic image) in much the same way that, in
this case, it inhabits its own painterly image.
Ulli Knall makes ceramic sculptures of Shapeshifters: aliens that can
change their shape to take on a human (or humanoid) form. Shapeshifting
can be seen as a metaphor for sculpture itself: manipulating an 'alien'
material to look human, or at least like something it isn't. But =
Knall's
work also raises quesions about the duplication of identites that are
possible in a world in which self-transformation has become the norm.
Szuper Gallery has functioned as a free-floating gallery environment =
since
it emerged from the financial ruins of the 'real' Szuper Gallery in =
Munich
a few years ago. It is run by a group of artists who use the gallery =
name
as a metaphor for an art practice within an institutional context; they
have become a parasitical gallery-within-a-gallery which sponges off =
other
institutions to examine the function of artists and art institutions in
society.
Tiago Carneiro da Cunha shows "Monolith", in which he presents the =
lyrics
of Robbie Williams' "Millenium" in the manner of the opening graphics of
"Star Wars". With a title that refers to Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A =
Space
Odyssey", Carneiro da Cunha invites the viewer to consider the contrasts
between contemporary popular culture and the grand visions of the future
which the prospect ot the turn of the millenium inspired in the past.
Ben Pruskin is showing a new installation that combines classical music
with a host of multicoloured monitors in an otherwise bare and sterile
space. On one of the monitors words appear one by one in varying speed,
forming a text that seems to keep turning back on itself, like a =
circular
story in which the beginning is simultaneously the end.
TAUTOLOGY is an exhibition in which repeating something means changing =
that
something. In each of the works in this exhibition, circular or =
repetitive
constructions alter the 'first readings' of the images (and texts)
involved, and in doing so put forward questions about the nature of
artistic conventions (and by extension about the nature of language). =
It
is one approach to prise open the fabric of language, creating room for
voices that otherwise couldn't be heard.
