But perhaps the focus should be on less visible machinations. I visited coastal/SW Texas last winter and was amazed how easy it seemed to cross the "border" (I'm sure I did, accidentally) -- which was often, at best, just a raised mound of earth, occasionally patrolled by white Jeeps, with some generator-driven spot-lights here and there. There were also all these tethered, white BATF blimps in the air, that monitored low-flying marijuana-laden planes from Mexico. Apparently, it is quite common for locals (who are economically dependent on the border-patrol industry), to come across big bales of hemp on the road... jettisoned by detected smugglers. /:b ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2001 12:51:41 +0930 From: "Ben Moretti" <bmoretti@sra.com.au> Subject: Re: <nettime> borderhack I was nearly the victim of a funny borderhack once, in China. We were trying to get into Zuhai off a boat from the Perl River. One of my travelling companions ~ my father-in-law of all people ~ was mocking the very stern guards by jumping back and forth over the border line singing "in, out, in, out". Communist guards don't have much of a sense of humour, but we almost made him smirk. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Heiko Recktenwald" <uzs106@IBM.rhrz.uni-bonn.de> To: <nettime-l@bbs.thing.net> Sent: Friday, August 24, 2001 1:58 AM Subject: Re: <nettime> borderhack > The most funny borderhack I ever saw was on a Christmas eve day in the > ---8X--snip nettime-l/mod ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2001 08:56:03 +0100 From: Phil Duncan <PDuncan@AggregateStudio.com> Subject: Re: <nettime> borderhack >Anyway, I like borders.
