<nettime> Re: WiReD: One More Thursday Night Dinner

The dotcommie bust is the biggest success of the 'net itself.

http coders and their managers (that outnumbered them 5:1) were nothing more
than aspiring middlemen that wanted to squeeze out other middlemen in
sell-the-shit-over-the-wire market. The commission was the sole holy grail for
dotcommers, and there is nothing worth reminiscing there. The generation that
could get inspiration and identity in lowering sales costs and selling eyeballs
is best forgotten.

Fortunately it was not inventive enough to screw up the basic functionality of
the 'net. For the 'net abhors middlemen, and the killer applications were
always p2p and they were always with us. E-mail needs no middlemen.
Gnutella/neonapsters need no middlemen. Despite efforts of sophisticated vapour
conjurers to invent new killer apps from the thin air, the 'net is just that -
a network, a road mesh. We need no corporations and toll booths on our roads -
get the f*ck out of the way.
