“Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris weren’t the only gunmen,” says Russ Kick,
editor of ‘Everything You Know Is Wrong: The Disinformation Guide to
Secrets and Lies’ (The Disinformation Company, June 2002)
On April 20, 1999, the worst school shooting in American history occurred
at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. In the end, twelve
students, one teacher, and two gunmen lay dead. Though early news reports
quoted eyewitnesses talking about more than two gunmen, we were soon told
that the massacre was perpetrated by only two individuals--students Eric
Harris and Dylan Klebold.
In November of 2000, Jefferson County (Colorado) released 11,000 pages of
raw documents relating to the investigation. The release was covered by
the media, which noted that the documents contained new insights into the
killers’ motivations, the deaths of specific students, and other aspects
of the tragedy. However, the press scrupulously ignored the amazing number
of reports from eyewitnesses who saw people other than Harris and Klebold
taking part.
Russ Kick’s article “Witnesses to a Massacre: Other Participants at
Columbine”--available only in the book Everything You Know Is
Wrong--breaks the silence. It contains verbatim extracts from the written
statements and police interviews of 45 students and faculty whose accounts
throw into question the official version of events. Among the revelations:
* Several students in the cafeteria and on the soccer field saw a young
man dressed in jeans and a white T-shirt throwing bombs during the attack.
(Harris and Klebold were dressed in black trenchcoats and black pants.)
* Five students identified by name another student as being a perpetrator.
One even made eye contact with him while he was shooting.
* Four students who were barricaded in a science room offered stunningly
similar descriptions of a gunman they saw through the small window of the
door. He was in his mid-twenties to early thirties, short, stocky, and
muscular, with cropped hair that was either blonde or black with blonde
tips. One student even provided a sketch of this unknown man (which is
published for the first time in Everything You Know Is Wrong).
* Other students reported seeing a suspect wearing camouflage pants. One
witness saw this person shoot teacher David Sanders, who died a few hours
later.
* Several students, a teacher, and a coach reported the presence of a
gunman on the roof of the school.
* Three students heard the shooters referring to one of their accomplices
as “Joe.”
* Several students reported seeing other gunmen, including three shooters
in the cafeteria simultaneously and someone with a gun crouching in the
bushes near the school.
* A teacher and two library staffers reported hearing gunshots between
1:00 PM and 2:00 PM, although Harris and Klebold are officially said to
have killed themselves at 12:08 PM.
* Further eyewitness statements involve a pickup truck slowly circling the
parking lot during the rampage, a student who was arrested at the scene
(whom the authorities have never discussed), the assistant principal
naming “Ned” as a perpetrator, and other pieces of information that don’t
fit into the official story.
“When I first saw these statements, I was stunned,” Kick said. “My
previous book had an article about early media coverage of the Columbine
shooting, so I knew there were many reports of other people taking part.
But reading the raw documents and seeing the details takes it to a whole
new level.”
What about those who question the validity of eyewitness testimony?
“That’s certainly a concern,” Kick replied. “But when you have three or
more eyewitnesses separately describing the same thing, it’s pretty
powerful. For example, there’s amazing consistency among reports of the
bomb-thrower in the white tee-shirt. And several of those kids saw him
causing havoc alongside Harris and Klebold. In other words, they saw three
perpetrators at the same time. That’s quite persuasive.”
Is there any other evidence that more people were involved? “Definitely,”
said Kick. “There was only so much time and so many pages I could devote
to the case, but there’s a lot more.” Such as? “Since turning the article
in, I’ve found even more eyewitness reports indicating more than two
gunmen. Then there are the media reports from April 20 and the days
immediately afterward, which tell a very different story. As far as
physical evidence goes, there are bullets and bullet fragments from the
crime scene that don’t match the guns used by Harris, Klebold, or law
enforcement personnel. Then we have all the evidence that’s being
withheld. The authorities have released the autopsy for Eric Harris but
not for Dylan Klebold. They’ve released the autopsies for two students but
not for the other ten or for the teacher, David Harris. There are missing
ballistics, evidence, and eyewitness reports. There are maps of the crime
scene that have never been released, which have been leaked to me. They
show that, contrary to what we’ve been told, the authorities fired into
the library--where almost all the students were killed--and into
classrooms where, according to the official story, Harris and Klebold
never were. I‘ve posted these maps to my Website, alterNewswire.”
Sounds like they’re hiding something, doesn’t it? “Oh yes,” Kick replied.
“There’s no doubt that they’re refusing to release a lot of material. The
only question is why. And I can only think of two reasons. Either the
authorities haven’t told us what happened that day, or they’re hiding
their inept handling of the situation. Or both. The parents of Daniel
Rohrbough are convinced their son was killed by a cop, not by one of the
gunmen. They’re currently suing to get to the truth. In fact, the parents
of two slain students and one student who survived that day are on record
as saying the authorities are lying about Columbine. I quote them in my
article.”
Will we ever find out what really happened? “I wouldn’t bet on it,” Kick
said. “Then again, there are a number of people who are refusing to let
the secrecy and lies stand, so there’s hope yet.”

THE DANIEL LANGLOIS FOUNDATION GRANTS NEARLY HALF A MILLION TO 15 PROJECTS
Research Grant Program for Individual Artists or Scientists
Montreal, May 7, 2001 - The Daniel Langlois Foundation for Art, Science, and
Technology has just granted nearly half a million dollars to 15 projects by
artists dedicated to merging art and science through the use of new
technologies.
The Foundation received 302 applications during its 2002 call for projects
for The Research Grant Program for Individual Artists or Scientists. Its
international jury examined 129 of the projects, selecting 15 to benefit
from the Foundation's program for individuals. Of the projects chosen, seven
are from the United States and six from Canada. Other projects also come
from India, the Netherlands and Yugoslavia.
Besides Mr. Daniel Langlois, the jury included Ms. Pat Binder
(Argentina/Germany), Mr. Andreas Broeckmann (Germany), Mr. Luc Courchesne
(Canada) and Mr. Jean Gagnon, the Foundation's director of programs. This
year, grants range from $9, 454 to $57,200. *Below is a list of the grant

**Representing Simultaneous Images**
**Representing Simultaneous Images** involves creating a series of artworks,
each incorporating multiple video feeds to produce a single dynamic image.
The goal is to explore different ways to display connected streams of
information simultaneously without losing the subtlety contained in the
original streams.
Alan Dunning (Calgary, Alberta, Canada)
**Representations of the Body in Liquid Media Spaces**
Alan Dunning conducts technical and conceptual research into visualizing the
human body's biological output. This output is represented by patterns in
moving liquid surfaces generated by the effect of a magnetic field on a
ferrofluid.
Beatrice Gibson (Mumbai, India)
Beatrice Gibson investigates the teleworker's disembodied proximity by using
a recording and poetic rearticulation of the teleworker's voice in the
acoustic space of an on-line environment.
Trevor Gould (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
**Three Dimensional Blur with Digital Wind and Accessories**
This experimental project focuses on the development of existing
mould-making materials enhanced through digital manipulations in 3-D
printing and through muscle wire manipulations. The project also reflects on
what constitutes a human figure when this figure is reproduced as blurred
movement arrested in 3-D space.

**Terrain Machine**
**Terrain Machine** is an analogue mechanical device interfaced to a digital
computer, creating a physical representation of the Earth's surface. Relying
on accurate, scientific data sources, this project addresses issues
surrounding the representation and construction of our reality in its
various forms.

**Skeletal Reflections**
**Skeletal Reflections** is an autonomous humanoid robotic sculpture that
mimics gestures using only the basic structure of the human form, the
skeleton. This machine without a skin represents the significant merger of
sculptural practice with modern machine technology.
Thomas McIntosh (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
**Ondulation**
**Ondulation** explores a synesthetic relationship between air, water, sound
and light. The work investigates a set of physical phenomena at the point
where they overlap. The aim is to produce an audiovisual performance and a
stand-alone installation.
David Rokeby (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
Common sense gathering and discursive structure for **The Giver of Names**
project
This project builds on the research involved in **The Giver of Names**
(1998). First, the system is provided with unsupervised ways to accumulate a
sort of common sense through reading electronic texts. Then, an open
mechanism is developed to generate discursive structure so that the system
can construct paragraphs with some sort of coherent trajectory of ideas.
RTMark (Loudonville, New York, United States)
**CORPSE** (Corporate Organism Replication and Patterning in a Simulated
Ecosystem)
RTMark will create a Web-based, single- and multi-player computer game that
treats corporations as organisms. Called **CORPSE**, the game engages
players in a generative discourse about the consequences of allowing
corporations to exist with minimal regulations. As well, the game serves as
a home laboratory for exploring the legal conditions that might lead to
entirely different emergent behaviour.
Thecla Schiphorst and Susan Kozel (Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada)
**whisper**: wearable body architectures
**whisper**, a participatory installation, uses wearable computers and
wireless computer communication, builds on physical practices such as dance
improvisation, and manifests cultural and scientific theories of embodiment.
Bill Seaman and Ingrid Verbauwhede (Los Angeles, California, United States)
**The Poly-sensing Environment** (toward the development of an integrated
distributed technology exploring poetic/informational grammars of attention
and functionality)
This interdisciplinary project seeks to develop research aimed at creating a
poetic/informational interactive IT system that relies on multi-modal
sensory devices. These devices collaborate in a distributed fashion and are
linked to a dynamic virtual imaging environment and the Internet.
Geoffrey Smedley (Gibsons, British Columbia, Canada)
**Descartes' Clown: the Roulette**
**Descartes' Clown: the Roulette** is a sculptural installation in the mode
of the absurd. Like Descartes' celebrated dream that lies at the foundation
of modern science, the project is drawn from the unconscious, from dream
fragments of great acuity.
Stealth Group (Belgrade, Yugoslavia, and Rotterdam, the Netherlands)
**3/4 process + 1/4 matter**
The foundation is supporting the development of **3/4 process + 1/4
matter**, a responsive design procedure in the boundary zone between fields
of digital/media technologies and architecture.
Igor Vamos (Troy, New York, United States)
**Grounded**
**Grounded** will be a location-triggered random-access documentary that
reveals histories of abandonment and conflict in a remote desert town.
Viewers will experience this documentary on site, like a walking tour. The
project involves developing a Web browser plug.
Steina Vasulka (Santa Fe, New Mexico, United States)
**Seven Spheres** (working title)
After completing **Of the North**, the artist is now pursuing her obsession
with round images by planning a large project with spherical images
projected onto round, translucent screens.

Announcement of RSG's Release of
CarnivorePE "Personal Edition" Data Detection Tool
WASHINGTON, DC - The US Department of Art & Technology, in
conjunction with Radical Software Group (RSG) and the Federal Bureau
of Investigation (FBI), is announcing today the availability of the
CarnivorePE "Personal Edition" detection tool to perform packet
sniffing on a local area network. CarnivorePE was created by RSG, an
artist-collective that has been producing client applications since
last year that openly taps networks for aesthetic, social and
politically-motivated purposes. CarnivorePE is inspired by DCS1000
(known by its nickname "Carnivore"), software used by the FBI to
perform electronic wiretaps. The tool is available at:
www.rhizome.org/carnivore.
CarnivorePE uses personal computers to transmit data streams to one
or more client systems. Pioneering a new platform for surveillance
systems, the detection tool allows users to examine networks to
identify the presence of specific data types and thereby unleash
their computers to conduct the musicalization of network traffic,
deconstruct media, trigger words, and investigate streaming bits to
expose their true content-information.
Last year, RSG made available the first edition of the Carnivore tool
that surpassed other network sniffing techniques, including Etherpeek
and SurfWatch. This current release updates the tool to include the
ability to detect sustainable encounters and designable futures.
CarnivorePE greatly improves on the original FBI DCS1000 wiretapping
software, openly monitoring Web communications as well as serving
data to any recipient for real-time analysis.
RSG also continues to work aggressively with other government
agencies and industry to provide timely and effective warnings and
countermeasures to the increasingly damaging threats posed to the
U.S. cyber infrastructure.
As with earlier RSG exploits, there is currently no way for the
technology industry to contain this "open source" project. Rather,
development depends on a community-wide effort to detect data
streams, thereby increasing the number of computers that can be used
to reshape the way individual and organizations collaborate and share
information. For that reason, RSG strongly encourages widespread use
of its detection tool, as artist-generated, data-revealing client
applications increasingly become available - a mega-media portal
through the blending of mediums.
Any anti-CarnivorePE related activity should be reported to the RSG
Watch and Warning Unit, or computer emergency response support

return of the Photostatic title after a three-year absence in support
of a project of the Neoists called Art Strike 1990-1993. An

The Art Strike had a forceful impact on the Photostatic project. Up
