I guess this is the effect of all that protesting. My question now is, will the new organization be more transparent and democratic or is this just a huge PR maneuver? Is this the beginning of a new vision in international trade that aims for equality of resource distribution? I have my doubts, but it sound like a step in the right direction. May 23, 2002 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION WILL DISBAND, REFOUND UNDER NEW CHARTER [.....] ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 May 2002 03:43:59 +0100 From: "Jason Diceman" <J.Diceman@westminster.ac.uk> Subject: RE: WTO goes ethical - it's a fake! Sorry... the WTO press release is a fake. In my excitement to be the first to tell others about the new world order, I forgot to give an extra level of research into the facts (this is why I am not in journalism). Truth is: gatt.org, a mock WTO website produced by the good people at RTMark, created the fake press release. You can understand the mistake if you compare http://www.gatt.org with http://www.wto.org I was wondering why the WTO had my email address. Forgot I had signed up to the RTMark list 2 years ago. Sorry about that. Guess this proves culture jamming does have an effect. In a way, I'm kinda glad it is not true... now we still have something to protest about ;-) Other fake websites can be found at: http://directory.google.com/Top/Society/Activism/Media/Culture_Jamming/Spoof _Websites/ Thanks to Toby Slater for bringing this to my attention. http://www.tobyslater.com >From now on, I promise, all mass emails will be thoroughly checked. - - JD – ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 May 2002 15:46:42 +0530 From: "Vivek Durai" <vivek@mumbai.kochhar.com> Subject: Re: <nettime> WTO to shut down, refound under new charter Please do not post fraudulent news releases. The website www.gatt.org is not an official site. The owner of the domain name is.... WTO is not disbanding. The content on the website is clearly contrary to the official WTO stance: http://www.wto.org/english/thewto_e/whatis_e/10mis_e/10m06_e.htm Even to the dumbest observer, it should be logical that an organization that has taken decades to form cannot be wished away so easily, especially without large-scale deliberations *between member states*. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 May 2002 10:39:04 -0400 From: "Kate Armstrong" <kate27@bellatlantic.net> Subject: <nettime> WTO to shut down, refound under new charter Another brilliant prank by our friends at killyourtv.com Kate # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: majordomo@bbs.thing.net and "info nettime-l" in the msg body # archive: http://www.nettime.org contact: nettime@bbs.thing.net
