<nettime> DiEM25 Green Paper on Technological Sovereignty |
Dear nettimers, I read this policy paper of the DiEM25 movement and really liked it. It’s good to see that there is progress in bringing together different fields that have been dealt with in different scenes for a long time. The text mentions the building of a digital commonwealth. “We want to end the practice of socialising the costs and privatizing the profits.” For sure, the tech agenda can be much more radical and concrete. Here is the pdf: https://diem25.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Technological-Sovereignty-Green-Paper-No-3.pdf <https://diem25.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Technological-Sovereignty-Green-Paper-No-3.pdf>. The procedure inside DiEM25 is explained here: https://internal.diem25.org/en/vote/205/public <https://internal.diem25.org/en/vote/205/public>. The document proproses concrete short-term, mid-term and long-term measures how to deal with platform monopolies, from privacy-by-design, GDPR, user consent to seeing social media as public utilities to the creation of data commons. There is a lot of talk about ‘rights’: to encryption, computation, algorithmic opt-out, interaction, equal treatment etc. What fails is a mention of building (European) alternatives. Is regulation of US-American platforms the only thing we can come up with? What do you think? I am curious.
