Re: <nettime> email filter blues and the s word |
hei Geert like a lot of academics I have a few email addresses. One website is attached to an now abandoned spam-catcher address that gets about 30 fishery mails a day, much of the kind you have. My university mail gets large numbers of vanity press and predatory publishing mail. Many are personalised, many start with variants on 'we enjoyed your piece on pandemic culture, would you like to publish in the Moonee Ponds Journal of Virology' (or quantum engineering or Bactrian archaeology). Or be the editor of the same. Or edit a special issue. Whatever it is, if you reply the requests for payment start. One or two may be mechanical Turks converting scraped data into personalised mail. Micro$oft filters catch a few; some are resistant to blocking. It wouldn't surprise me if some are generated using services from the monopolists, which would explain why monoplist filters don't exclude them. The environmental cost of farmed mails and farmed filtering has to be pretty huge. I've tried engaging spam mobile calls in conversation about their employers but they hang up: obviously part of the script. They aren't just annoying: they are bad people ________________________________ From: nettime-l <nettime-l-bounces@lists.nettime.org> on behalf of nettime-l-request@lists.nettime.org <nettime-l-request@lists.nettime.org> Sent: Thursday, 7 December 2023 1:45 pm To: nettime-l@lists.nettime.org <nettime-l@lists.nettime.org> Subject: [EXT] nettime-l Digest, Vol 6, Issue 2 External email: Please exercise caution Send nettime-l mailing list submissions to nettime-l@lists.nettime.org To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit https://lists.servus.at/mailman/listinfo/nettime-l or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to nettime-l-request@lists.nettime.org You can reach the person managing the list at nettime-l-owner@lists.nettime.org When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of nettime-l digest..." I discussed it with Christian and he also tried but it simply doesn?t work. Christian however created a solution: you can read my email to nettime here: https://swertz.org/index.php/s/W2S7scPHEDtr7Lo. Absurd, but what else can we do? We would be very interested to discuss this case further, here, on the list itself, but let?s see if that will work out. Can we still use the s word or not even that?
