The current issue focuses on Art and the Military, and features an
interview with Manuel DeLanda.

Switch in Volume 3 Number 3 is proud to present an interview with
philosopher, technologist and former front-line artist Manuel DeLanda. In
his latest work, One Thousand Years of Non-Linear History, DeLanda
challenges methodologies that view history through the lens of
linguistics, texts, and economics by instead examining the relationship of
societies to the flow of matter, energy, information and the related
technological escalations. In his previous book, War in the Age of
Intelligent Machines, he had explored the life-like qualities of physical
phenomena at points of singularity, along with the mechanical physics of
military conflict viewed from various organizational levels, in order to
speculate the convergence of the biological phylum and machinic phylum in
a contingent and ultimately inseparable evolutionary complex. There are
interesting perspectives here for anyone interested in net.art, both
because the technology used derives from military origin, but also because
the art of the network is being created from within the same
human-machinic complex.
Just as success on the battlefield is increasingly mediated by intelligent
human/machinic/software combinations (cyborgs), so is success in high-tech
societies being dictated by a contingent yet unavoidable technological
determinism. The new cultural battlefield of electromagnetic waves,
jamming, sensors and deception is an unavoidable electronic plane which
intersects even the most ardent luddite, (remember how the unibomber's
manifesto was available on the internet before being published in the
press?) Clearly artists have both the responsibility and self-interest
necessitating involvement in the critical and technological development of
the digital network and electromagnetic spectrums; yet the existence of
structural/cultural barriers within the techno-human complex often prevent
the artist from attaining the capital or power to exert significant
influence except within the limited sphere(s) of the artworld.
Following this, Gary Singh's (M.A. 1997, Interdisciplinary Studies)
Cyberthugee and the Ridiculous World Order, suggests that artists and
others resist the decentralized power of late-capital by engaging in the
shadow tactics of ridicule and anonymity inspired by the Thugs in their
resistance to the centralized authority of British colonial rule. His
recommendation is that the 19th century tactics of assassination by
strangulation be replaced in the contemporary network context by character
assassination.
A very different strategy makes itself apparent in Monica Vasilescu's work
on artist Michael Naimark. Rather than lob ridicule-grenades from behind
the veil of the internet, Naimark has concentrated on a strategy of
infiltration and tactics of cooperation. Having worked for many high-tech
companies to produce art which also helps serve the development of
commercial technologies, Naimark is able to recount his experience from
the front-lines of silicon valley business culture.
Of course, as in the past, Switch has sought to clarify some of the
sensitive issues surrounding art and technology by providing our visitors
with useful links. In both versions v3n1 and v3n2 we collected
intelligence on web art; most succinctly culminating in the first Switch
Web Art Taxonomy (v3n2). We persist. The Taxonomy presented in the current
version has been curated by 1997 CADRE institute MFA graduate and current
art faculty member Jan Ekenberg.
Finally, we have many projects for you to infiltrate in the gallery.
Special mention should be made of the latest derivation of the
Stillman(tm) projects. With Stillman, CGI artist Lisa Jevbratt, (also a
1997 CADRE institute MFA graduate and current art faculty member),
captures the information generated as users navigate Switch and uses it to
provide alternate ways to consume the site, as well as tautological
visualizations wherein the site itself becomes a form of information
regarding its traversal.
Switch is the new media art journal of the CADRE Institute of the School
of Art and Design at San Jose State University. It is published on the Web
three times annually. We are interested in fostering a critical viewpoint
on issues and developments in the multiple crossovers between art and
technology.
Our main focus is on questioning and analyzing as well as reporting and
discussing these new art forms as they develop, in hopes of encouraging
dialogue and possible collaboration with others who are working on and
considering similar issues. Switch aims to critically evaluate
developments in art and technology in order to contribute to the formation
of alternative viewpoints with the intention of expanding the arena in
which new art and technology emerge.

Call for Proposals
In June-July 1998 LMC is staging Resonance FM - a 28 day, London-wide arts
radio station as part of the South Bank Centre's John Peel-curated Meltdown
Festival.
Besides curating the "greatest hits" of 60 years worth of artists
made-for-radio works LMC is also encouraging artists of all persuasions to
produce new recorded and live-to-air works.
LMC has a limited budget to pay for expenses and costs associated with
programmes and can provide limited access to its post-production facility
to edit down tapes.
The deadline for the return of the attached form is March 7th 1998.

Dear friends, dear colleagues,
The Viktoria Research Institute is pleased to invite researchers and
practitioners to a one-day workshop hosted by Glorianna Davenport,
Director of Interactive Cinema, MIT Media Labs, USA, and Maureen
Thomas, Head of Screen Studies, National Film & Television School, UK,
on the theme
The Future of Fun: Tomorrow's Technological Entertainment
During the workshop, participants will develop themes such as:
* What will the "entertainment landscape" look like in 5
years time? 10 years?
* How can researchers from various disciplines help form
the future of fun?
* What technologies and techniques will be important for
tomorrow's entertainment - networks, agents, virtual reality,
sensors, mobile devices, etc.?
* What is the role of interactive storytelling and how can
interactivity and stories be integrated?
* How will current formats like film, computer games and
internet chat-lines merge and mutate into new technologies,
and will there be entirely new forms of entertainment with
no resemblance of what we have today?
This will be an active workshop, not a tutorial, and participants will
be expected to contribute their own ideas and visions to the workshop.
An important goal with the workshop is to start building a European
network of people interested in research on areas related to
entertainment technology. We hope that participants will be able to
keep in touch and share ideas after the workshop, and that this may
increase the awareness and cooperation between people doing similar
work in Europe.
On May 9, the day after the workshop, there will be free lectures by
Glorianna Davenport and Maureen Thomas, and an "open house" with
demonstrations of projects developed at the Viktoria Research
Institute.
To apply for the workshop, please send:
* A short description of you and your work
* A brief (no more than 1 page) text describing an artefact
(device / program / technique / etc.) that does not currently
exist, but that you think will play an important role for
tomorrow's entertainment. It would be an advantage if the
idea is based on your own work, but this is not strictly
necessary.

The days of this society are numbered. Its reasons and its merits have been
weighed in the balance and found wanting; its inhabitants are divided into
two parties, one of which wants to build their own spaceships and leave
this society behind.
The Intergalactic Conference organised by the Association of Autonomous
Astronauts in Bologna, earth, April 18-19 1998, will explore the new
possibilities that open up when we form autonomous communities in outer
space.
The Association of Autonomous Astronauts (AAA) was launched on April 23rd
1995 as the world's first independent and community-based space program. A
Five Year Plan was also established for creating, by the year 2000, a
world-wide network of local, community-based AAA groups dedicated to
building their own spaceships.
This conference will bring together AAA delegates from around the world to
present reports from the world-wide network of AAA groups. The conference
will initiate a new phase of CONSOLIDATION for the AAA, during which
Autonomous Astronauts will examine the achievements that they have made so
far and prepare for the final stage of the Five Year Plan.
The AAA is at the cutting edge of a struggle around how space exploration
technology is used and who has access to it.
The AAA is the most exciting space exploration program active in the world
today
and the AAA's space travel includes: raves in space, sharp
critiques of NASA, new space suit designs, sex in zero gravity and
games of three-sided football.

>from mythic to techno-ritual
giocondaís smile is conceived as a meeting of the representatives from
several countries for a few days of collaboration in an artistic medium
which is performance. The title is essentially in order to analyze and
rethink the genre from the viewpoint of the historical evolution of fine
arts. Meanwhile the festival will be an official presentation of
performance to the local audience. By titling the event with a
metaphorical epithet of the ësymbolic smileí from historical fine artsí
Number One symbol, i.e. Leonardoís Mona Lisa, we take the responsibility
to apply it figuratively to one of the most revolutionary and provocative
artistic and spiritual manifestations of postmodern times. We dared to
call it the mysterious smile of contemporary fine arts, that is the art of
the human body, senses, experiences and spirit. One of the main aims
involves introducing the new medium to the ëtraditional art loverí in
Moldova. Even though it already has a limited history in Moldova,
performance still remains a mysterious innovation (terra incognito) here,
mainly due to its own revolutionary essence. The absolute rejection of the
object (the work of the artist) as a final product, which has served the
consumerís aesthetical delight since the institutionalization of fine
arts, in favor of an immediate corporeal and spiritual beauty, has
generated an essential shift in the history of aesthetical thinking. The
event will take place in a very rich environment in this sense.
Considering our heritage in terms of the traditions and rituals of our
ancestors we anticipate a reincarnation of a sublime expression into
contemporary frame. Using the human body as an expressive tool to convey
a message has a long ethnographic and folkloric tradition in the European
Southeast. Folk drama holds an important place in Moldovan folklore,
especially in customs related to the calendar and cycles of human
existence. For example, those customs connected to the winter solstice
offer an ample inventory with various ritual attributes like actors,
garments, mimic, gestures and motions, masks, etc. I think that the drama
tradition mentioned above serves as one of the major justifications for
the great interest (perhaps only subconsciously) which appears the new
generation of local artists. Even though its history is very recent in
Moldova this medium is very often utilized by many visual artists. We
would like to reconsider this cultural heritage of ours in order to give
it a new dimension. We see a return to the rite as to a modern ceremonial
act which did not consume the potential and the senses. It just modified
its aspect due to the electronic ñ informational environment in which we
live.
The festival will take place in city of Chisinau, Republic of Moldova from
May 10 to 15. We advise our foreign participants to submit a project to
the centre. It should contain photos, drawings and other explanatory
materials, to indicate the place where the artist will perform his/their
work/s and expected human / technical resources.
