Re: <nettime> (fwd) Washington Times: CNN, State Department Alliance

Now it can be told: Bill Clinton's not bombing Serbia to impress Monica,
but to get validation from Christiane. Has the man no shame?

For those unfamiliar with the Washington Times, it was founded in May
1982 by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon who, aside from the Moonie business,
felt America had strayed from God, represented by Moon himself. He saw
the Times as a rival to the Washington Post, a well-respected if
complacent newspaper, and sought to use it to promote "family values."

The Times is consistently right-wing, and its editorial tone alternates
between whining or gloating. It never met a Republican war it didn't
like, nor a Democratic one it didn't hate. The Times has succeeded in
making the Washington Post appear farther to the left than it really is
and is the paper of choice of people who consider the mass media, owned
by people like Rupert Murdoch, to be liberal. The Times sometimes breaks
important stories that the "liberal establishment" would like to keep
quiet, but it is often a poor winner.

This editorial is a case in point. It raises legitimate questions about
the NATO action and U.S. foreign policy, as well as journalistic ethics,
but ruins it all by ascribing the whole mess to a cabal of two. As for
the marriage, "recent" may be stretching it, since Rubin and Amanpour
were married 7 (now 8) months ago. They had been seeing each other for
years, but had kept it quiet because it is a private and, yes, sensitive
matter.
