Title: Announcement Podium Discussion March
18th
STEIM presents on tuesday, 18th March at
20.30h:
Composer and interactive computer musician Bill Hsu, of San
Francisco State University, will overview the underlying theory and
several systems for modal synthesis. Modal synthesis
approximates the resonances of sound spectra. It is a promising
approach for real-time generation of sounds from real objects with
inharmonic spectra, such as bells, glass bottles, wooden blocks, woks
etc. The emphasis will be on building and using models that can
be adapted for real-time performance, where parameters can be adjusted
to reflect different types of excitation, including striking with hard
sticks and soft mallets, and scraping and bowing. For this he will
present an MSP-based system based on externals and patches.
Biographical note:
Bill Hsu is an Associate Professor of Computer Science
at San Francisco State University. He has worked with
performance interfaces, real-time sound synthesis, and
interactive sound installations. Other interests include
computer architecture and performance evaluation.
