STEIM presenteert op donderdag 11 mei om 20.30 u een concertavond met  
Tim Hecker en Audile

Tim Hecker
Tim Hecker is een Canadese muzikant en geluidskunstenaar. Sinds 1996  
produceert hij audiowerken voor labels als Mille Plateaux, Alien8,  
Force Inc, Staalplaat en Fat Cat. Zijn werken zijn wel omschreven als  
“gestructureerde ambient”, “tectonische kleurenplaten” en  
“kathedralen van elektronische muziek”. Hecker heeft zich  
voornamelijk gericht op de kruispunten van noise, dissonantie en  
melodie, maar zijn vaardigheden om songs te schrijven, die zowel  
fysiek zijn als emoties oproepen, spreekt hij voortdurend aan. The  
New York Times heeft zijn werk omschreven als “onderzoekende,  
abstracte stukken, waarin statische en sub-bastonen klinken naast  
zich langzaam ontwikkelende noten en akkoorden, een beetje als een  
krater die langzaam de omheen liggende aarde opzuigt. Zijn Radio Amor  
werd door The Wire uitgeroepen als een belangwekkende CD-uitgave. Tim  
Hecker maakt ook werk voor dansproducties en geluidsinstallaties en  
schrijft teksten. Ook is Hecker een producer van technomuziek; hij  
maakte platen en tourde onder de naam Jetone. Tim Hecker heeft zijn  
werk gespeeld op o.a. Sonar (Barcelona), MUTEK (Montreal), Impakt  
Festival (Utrecht), Victoriaville (Quebec), IDEAL (Nantes), Vancouver  
New Music Festival) en Transmediale (Berlijn). Hij heeft live  
opgetreden met artiesten als Oren Ambarchi en Fly Pan Am en speelde  
in programma’s met o.a. Godspeed you Black Emperor en Isis.

Audile
Audile is een improvisatieduo bestaande uit Yutaka Makino en dj  
sniff, beiden woonachtig in Nederland. Zij gebruiken zelfgebouwde  
soft- en hardware om nieuwe expressiemogelijkheden van elektronische  
muziek te ontdekken. Yutaka Makino’s belangrijkste instrument is een  
uniek real-time granulair synthese softwareprogramma. Dj sniff  
gebruikt draaitafels om een groot arsenaal aan klanktexturen mee te  
genereren, waarbij hij zelfgebouwde digital signal processing  
aanwendt. Juist deze zelfgemaakt instrumenten geeft Audile de  
mogelijkheid om zich van de subtiele maar vastgelegde gebaren in de  
elektronische muziek af te bewegen. Audile streeft naar de hoogste  
graad van muzikale virtuositeit die een maker van elektronische  
muziek kan bereiken in een live geïmproviseerde setting. En  
vanzelfsprekend bereik je dit niet door slimme software en technische  
handelingen alleen; Audile gaat het ook om het raffinement waarmee  
het auditieve zintuig wordt bespeeld.
Yutaka Makino probeert in zijn werk de historische uitgangspunten van  
de elektronische muziek te integreren in de hedendaagse context,  
waarbij hij psycho-akoestische fenomenen en ruimtelijke perceptie  
onderzoekt.
Dj sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit) is een draaitafelmuzikant die ervan  
uitgaat dat het creëren van nieuwe instrumenten om elektronische  
muziek mee te maken een artistiek unieke ervaring oplevert, meer dan  
met het gebruik van bestaande producten. Takuro is als onderzoeker  
tijdelijk aan STEIM verbonden.

STEIM presents on Thursday May 11 a concert evening with Tim Hecker  
and Audile

Tim Hecker
Tim Hecker is a Canadian-based musician and sound artist, born in  
Vancouver. Since 1996, he has produced a range of audio works for  
both international and Canadian recording imprints such as Mille  
Plateaux, Alien8, Force Inc, Staalplaat, and Fat Cat. His works have  
been described as “structured ambient”, “tectonic color plates” and  
“cathedral electronical music” however for the most part, have  
focused on exploring the intersections of noise, dissonance and  
melody, fostering an approach to songcraft which is both physical and  
emotive. The New York Times has described his work as “foreboding,  
abstract pieces in which static and sub-bass rumbles open up around  
slow moving notes and chords, like fissures in the earth waiting to  
swallow them whole”.  His Radio Amor was considered to be a key  
recording in 2003 by Wire magazine. His work has also included  
commissions for contemporary dance, sound-art installations, and  
various writings. He is also an acclaimed producer of techno, having  
toured and produced under the name Jetone. Tim has presented his work  
extensively including performances at Sonar (Barcelona), MUTEK  
(Montreal), Impakt Festival (Utrecht), Victoriaville (Quebec), IDEAL  
(Nantes), Vancouver New Music Festival, and Transmediale (Berlin).  
His live performances have included collaborations with artists such  
as Oren Ambarchi and Fly Pan Am, and has supported bands including  
Godspeed you Black Emperor and Isis. He lives between Montreal and  
Ottawa.

Audile
Audile is an improvisational duo formed by Yutaka Makino and dj sniff  
based in the Netherlands.
Both musicians utilize custom-built software and hardware to explore  
new possibilities of expression in contemporary electronic music.  
Yutaka Makino's primary instrument is a unique real-time granular  
synthesis software program. dj sniff uses the turntable to generate a  
wide variety of sound textures that are processed by a set of custom  
dsp effects. The use of custom tools allows them to break away from  
the subtle gestures of conventional computer interfaces. Audile  
strives for the highest musicianship and virtuosity that a modern-day  
electronic musician can attain in a live improvisational context.  
However, they realize that this cannot be achieved by the software  
they write or the speed they cut the fader, but only through the  
refinement of their audile senses.
Yutaka Makino’s work seeks to integrate the historic precedent of  
electronic music in a contemporary context, involving research in  
psycho-acoustic phenomena and spatial perception.
Dj sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit) is dj and turntable musician who  
believes that artists who create their own tools produce unique work  
that is distinctively different from those using pre-existing  
products. He is now residing the Netherlands where he is a visiting  
researcher for STEIM.
