As part of the celebration of the long expected release of the 100th (and 103rd) edition, Roma Publications invited Furtips to give a noisy pop concert.

BEAUTY UNREALIZED:
spider webs of personal universes seeking a form


In order to research the present status of beauty—understanding beauty not in terms of an object's internal quality but in terms of its effect on the beholder—PSWAR invited 94 persons of different professions and different backgrounds to submit lists of items or things that have inspired them professionally and privately. The result was a very personal library, a strange monument in which different intimate worlds came together. Every two weeks, the library space was also used to host events by artists whose work was inspiring to us and which engaged with the project’s main questions in new and valuable ways. The main credit for the project’s success therefore goes to its many contributors, people who dared to experiment, who enthusiastically participated in new collaborations, who were committed to test the limits of their own mediums and who made their works-in-progress openly accessible for examination and criticism.


Beauty Unrealized publication is the testimony of those collaborative ventures and symbolizes the closure of an important phase within the history of PSWAR. The publication also attempts to recreate the experience of past project and events and examines the possibility of translating the multi-dimensional time and space of the gallery into the one-dimensional pages of a book. The various texts together form an eclectic document that structurally follows the project’s phases, while also combining visual and semantic traces of past events with current preoccupations of the contributing artists and theoreticians. Therefore, it is not merely intended as a trace of the past, but hopefully as a source for future inspiration.

Parallel Encyclopedia
Batia Suter


Batia Suter’s Parallel Encyclopedia stands for a long-term investigation on images, presented through different selections in different media. Suter’s interest can be found in iconography and the shifting tension between ‘strong impact’ and ‘immunisation’ to the human brain, and for circumstances and causes by which images become charged with an associative added value. This 592 pages voluminous book, as a result of the investigation, contains solely images from other books and reads as an extremely rich filmic sequence that invites for endless flipping. Since this book by Suter offers an autonomous ‘print specific’ experience, it can be seen as a portable exhibition in itself, on paper.

Furtips


Furtips is a Dutch, Arnhem based lo-fi band, which consists of 4 members, who play: guitar, drums, bassguitar and electric violin / keyboard / percussion instruments. All of them (try to) sing and need microphones, except for the drummer – the others won’t let him sing. Furtips didn’t play live for a while but for this occasion they are happy to show up again and play mainly new songs. www.furtips.com
