De Canadese filmkunstenaar Mark Lewis vindt de mobiliteit van de
toeschouwer belangrijk. Hij prefereert de manier van tentoonstellen
zoals dat in een museum gedaan wordt. Hier kunnen de mensen staan en
vrij bewegen. Lewis laat zijn films als het ware 'leven' in het soort
ruimte waarin ook schilderijen en foto's te vinden zijn. Want, hij wil
ze naast elkaar zetten als gelijken.

Belangrijk in zijn werk is dan ook de relatie tussen het bewegende beeld
(film) en het stilstaande beeld (fotografie en schilderkunst). Een film
kan schilderachtig zijn vindt Lewis. Ervaring en tijd zijn elementen die
film anders maken dan schilderkunst en fotografie. Lewis licht deze
elementen daarom ook extra uit in zijn films.

Landschappen en de sociale activiteiten die zich daarin kunnen afspelen
zijn veel voorkomende onderwerpen. Lewis betoont zijn eer aan de
klassieke Hollywood film en aan de avantgarde, maar maakt nooit deel uit
van één van beide genres. Met het gebruik van de standaard trucs wil hij
op 35 mm film, met behulp van professionele acteurs, recht door de
cinema heenprikken en ons alle bijbehorende clichés tonen. Wat toeval
lijkt, is eigenlijk vantevoren bijzonder goed uitgedacht.

Tijdens de presentatie zal hij geinterviewd worden door Jelle Bouwhuis
(Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam).

The Canadian film artist Mark Lewis regards mobility of the spectators
as pivotal to his work. He prefers to exhibit his works in a museum-like
setting where people can stand and move freely. Lewis brings his films,
as it were, to 'life' in the kind of space that also holds paintings and
photographs. The reason behind this is his object to place both art
forms next to each other on equal terms.

An important element in his work is the relation between the moving
image (film) and the static (photography and painting). According to
Lewis, a film can be pictorial, with the elements of experience and time
setting film apart from painting and photography. Lewis therefore
spotlights and magnifies these elements in his films.

Landscapes and the social activity taking place therein are recurrent
themes in his work. Lewis pays tribute to the classic Hollywood cinema
and the avant-garde but never really blends in with either genre. With
standard filmic tricks and professional actors he uses the medium of 35
mm film to expose cinema and reveal cinematic clichés. What appears to
be coincidental is in fact very carefully contrived beforehand.

At this presentation, Mark Lewis will be interviewed by Jelle Bouwhuis
(Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam).
