BY DESIGN FOR DESIGN [ARCHITECTURE IS A MIXED MEDIUM] is a workshop and an expo which focusses on research by design, the activity of designing as a source of input for research. And more specifically, how 'research by design' can be displayed instead of being described.

Electric breeze, the first public experiment in the ATKN research project explores some of the fundamental elements of wireless communication. Technological development made it possible to use changing electrical fields as messenger, first over wires later via electromagnetic waves
through the air.Each day we use our wireless devices to pick up the messages, that travel on these waves, out of the air. The airspace that surrounds us is filled with data. In this experiment a vertical axis windmill uses the displacement of air to harvest energy to establish the speed of the windmill and the amount of energy generated defines the quality of the communication. Information will be send back and forth if conditions allow it. Air will generate energy which will produce communication and fill the airspace.

- an open artworkA city is a construction in space over a long time span. All experiences are related, all senses are mixed. Stories, sounds and images are contextualised into a dynamic database. The city as a shifting entity: from the frantic movement of rush hour madness to the slow giant's pace of urban development, movement is the defining feature of a metropolitan environment. Every unit, wether person, building or stray dog has it's own viewpoint, formed by the past and projected to the future. The project Shifting Metroppolis is set up as an open artlab, to investigate the interactions of these units in time and space, to weave a multidisciplinary artwork as a witness of Skopje's dynamics.
The Shifting Metropolis workshop/artwork is a collaboration between Annemie Maes, Shelbatra Jashari and Isjtar. Production by so-on for okno.
Upgrade! is an international, emerging network of autonomous nodes united by art, technology, and a commitment to bridging cultural divides. Its decentralized, non-hierarchical structure ensures that Upgrade! (i) operates according to local interests and their available resources; and (ii) reflects current creative engagement with cutting edge technologies. While individual nodes present new media projects, engage in informal critique, and foster dialogue and collaboration between individual artists, Upgrade! International functions as an online, global network that gathers annually in different cities to meet one another, showcase local art, and work on the agenda for the following year. Upgrade! Brussels/Ghent is represented by Annemie Maes and Eva De Groote.
The 3rd Upgrade! International meeting Chain Reaction will take place in Skopje, Macedonia from September 11th to 14th, 2008. Growing from the Upgrade! International community, this event takes the form of a city-wide digital art and networked culture festival including exhibitions, screenings, live local and streamed performances and a program of critical and active lectures and workshops exploring numerous facets in the field of digital art.

- sound performanceIn the Catatonic State Society, all members live in a state of reduced consciousness. Saccading their heads on spastic pulses or just in plain inertia, they seem indifferent to perception. These rythmical units do interact however, they behave in surprising ways towards one another. They move in and out of sync, form complex superstructures to shift from texture to crystalline structures, rythmic pulses and back again.

VANRICIO KAGOL II: the daring, spatial, computer-rendered, audiovisual, participative and interactive adaptation of the 30 pages score by Mauricio Kagel. The piece 'Eine Aufnahmezustand' (1969) is Kagel's idea of the radio studio as a complex 'musical instrument'. This is taken as a production method to be continuously adapted, in subsequent steps, first to a public (media) space and then maybe to be expanded as a virtual, Web-based version. The preparation process is understood as an integral part of the work. Friendly musicians and accidental visitors are involved in the process of the construction and montage, of the final 4-speaker-spatial piece. For the ZKMax implementation, Mauricio Kagel's view of paramusical communication is to be transfered to the untypical situation of the installation's production as a genuine musical activity.

- a performance on translationWhile translating, astronomical amounts of meanings are lost in a mysterious way. They end up in a no man's land of languages. Everything that's not translated, but can be transferred, that doesn't find a new mother tongue, that cannot be understood (anymore), lives a shadowy life. There is an entrance to this realm of in betweens: the room of lost meanings.

1. 5-19/9 By Design for Design : workshop & expo Sint-Lucas architectuur (participant and tutor : Gert Aertsen), Brussels
In 2006 startte Sint lucas architectuur een eerste reeks van 4 Research Training Sessions( RTS), gericht op ontwerpmatig onderzoek of ‘research by design. De RTS-sessie krijgt ditmaal de status en het protocol van een toonmoment en tentoonstelling. Hiermee willen we inspelen op de vraag naar de rol van design in de ontwikkeling van onderzoek en vooral hoe het ontwerpmatig onderzoek kan getoond worden (ipv beschreven). In ’Research by Design’ projecten wordt immers veelal gevraagd om naast een (reflectief) tekstgedeelte ook een vorm van artistieke- ontwerpmatige creatie te ontwikkelen die door middel van een tentoonstelling of andere vorm van toonmoment dient gepresenteerd te worden. Deze workshop wil hier een oefening in bieden en kreeg de titel :
BY DESIGN FOR DESIGN [ARCHITECTURE IS A MIXED MEDIUM].Het voornaamste doel van de sessie is om in een samenspel van kunstenaars en ontwerpers met diverse achtergronden een aantrekkelijke (?) tentoonstellingsatmosfeer te creëren die boeiende gesprekken stimuleert over creatie, ontwerp en hoe de onderzoeksdimensie ervan te tonen en te verdiepen via een ruimtelijke opstelling.

Installatie voor de expo : "COASTOMIZE! and other Mixed Realities" 6-7/09 en 13-14/09, PAM, Velzeke
Electric breeze is het eerste publieke experiment van het ATKN- onderzoeksproject en het verkent enkele fundamentele aspecten van draadloze communicatie. Technologische ontwikkelingen hebben het mogelijk gemaakt fluctuerende elektrische velden als informatiedrager te gebruiken, eerst via een draad als drager en later via elektromagnetische golven door de lucht. Elke dag gebruiken we draadloze toestellen om berichten uit de lucht te capteren, die via die golven worden verspreid. De lucht rondom ons zit propvol gegevens! In dit experiment gebruikt een windmolen met verticale assen de verplaatsing van de lucht, om energie te oogsten, zodat communicatie mogelijk wordt. De snelheid van de windmolen en de hoeveelheid gegenereerde energie definiëren de kwaliteit van de communicatie.

- open kunstwerkEen stad is een ruimtelijke constructie over een lange tijdsspanne. Alle ervaringen zijn gerelateerd, alle zintuigen worden vermengd. Verhalen, geluide en beelden worden gecontextualiseerd in een dynamische database. De stad is een verschuivende entiteit: van het hectische verkeer tijdens het spitsuur tot de trage reuzenpas van stedelijke ontwikkeling, beweging is het dominante kenmerk van een urbane omgeving. Het project Shifting Metropolis wordt opgezet als een open artlab, waar geinteresseerden op kunnen inpikken. Het doel de beweging en interactie van Skopje te schetsen in een multidisiplinair werk.
Upgrade! is een internationaal netwerk van autonome nodes die verenigt worden door kunst, technologie en de wil om culturele verschillen te overbruggen. Door de gedecentraliseerde, vlakke structuur werkt Upgrade! naargelang locale interesses en beschikbare middelen. Individuele nodes presenteren nieuwe media-projecten, gaan een kritische dialoog aan met individuele kunstenaars. Upgrade! International fungeert als een online, globaal netwerk dat jaarlijks in een andere stad samenkomt om elkaar te ontmoeten, lokale kunst te presenteren en de agenda en het werkschema op te stellen voor het volgend jaar. Upgrade! Brussel/Gent wordt vertegenwoordigd door Annemie Maes en Eva De Groote.
De 3de Upgrade! International meeting, Chain Reaction, neemt plaats in Skopje, Macedonie, van 11 tot 14 september 2008. Het is een stadsfestival voor digitale kunst en netwerkcultuur met tentoonstellingen, screenings, performances, lezingen en workshops.

- klankperformanceAlle leden van de Catatonic State Society lijden onder een gereduceerd bewustzijn. Ze schudden saccerend hun hoofd, hun ledematen hebben spasmes of ze zijn gewoon afwezig, ze zij niet vatbaar voor perceptie. Deze ritmische eenheden interageren echter op een verassende manier. Ze synchroniseren, vormen complexe superstructuren. Ze ondergaan een metamorphose van textuur tot kristallijn web, ritmische pulsen en eindigen weer in hun inerte, autistische rigor.
5. 17-20/9 VANRICIO KAGOL II, the participative installation(Golo Föllmer, Gívan Belá and guests), ZKMax, Munich
VANRICIO KAGOL II is een gedurfde transmediale, computergestuurde, audiovisuele, participatieve en interactieve adaptatie van de 30 pagina's tellende beschrijving van het stuk 'Eine Aufnahmezustand' (1969) van Mauricio Kagel. De originele idee maakt van de toenmalige radiostudio een complex muziekinstrument op zich. Deze idee wordt in opeenvolgende stappen uitgewerkt naar een realtime en live performance (voorjaar 2008, Bratislava Multiplace Festival), een publieke installatie (nu opgebouwd in de ZKMax ruimtes), en een autonome internet versie (jaja, een volgende keer!). Het hele process van de voorbereiding is een geintegreerd onderdeel van het eindresultaat. Bevriende muzikanten en toevallige passanten worden uitgenodigd deel te nemen aan de constructie en montage van het spatiele 4-kanaal- gestuurde werk. De partituur wordt nauwlettend gevolgd, geinterpreteerd, en getranscribeerd, waarbij de paramuzikale communicatie binnen de productie functioneert als een gewone muzikale activiteit.
6. 19-20/9 Shift (Marianne Kirch, Isjtar, Theodossia Stathi e.a.), Tube, Munich
- een performance over vertalingOp een geheimzinnige manier verdwijnen dagelijks bij het vertalen betekenissen van een astronomisch aantal. Die komen vervolgens in een niemandsland tussen de talen terecht. Alles wat niet vertaald, naar de overkant gedragen kan worden, wat geen nieuw (taal-) vaderland vindt, alles wat nog niet -ofwel niet meer- wordt begrepen, leidt hier noodgedwongen een eigen schaduwachtig leven. Er bestaat een toegang tot dit tussenrijk: de kamers van de verloren betekenissen.
Een performance met dans, geluid, muziek, kostuums, licht en BD door Marianne Kirch, Theodossia Stathi, Isjtar, Rolf Maier, Reynaldo Ramperssad, Dorothée Catry en Benoît Henken.
