Transnatural symposium
Zaterdag 13 maart,  de Verdieping TrouwAmsterdam

Multiplex Transnatural is de eerste van twee exposities met symposia.  
Transnatural laat jong en oud de interessantste pogingen uit kunst,  
design en wetenschap zien om technologie met de natuur te laten  
versmelten. Een kijkje in een rijke en nieuwe wereld met  
transnatuurlijke architectuur, installaties, games en meer.

De natuur was altijd al compleet, en toch nooit af. Technologie kan de  
natuur eindeloos uitbreiden, maar hij moet zich dan wel aan een aantal  
van dezelfde regels houden. Op het Transnatural symposium verkennen  
vooraanstaande ontwerpers, kunstenaars, wetenschappers en architecten  
de filosofische en culturele en praktische implicaties van de fusie  
tussen technologie en natuur. Met Rachel Armstrong, Tobie Kerridge,  
Elio Caccavale, Koert van Mensvoort en Jan Jongert.


Ochtend - lezingen:

* Dr. Rachel Armstrong (UK) / Haar onderzoek is gericht op het  
ontwikkelen van metabolic materials, bestemd voor de bebouwde  
omgeving. Armstrong voorziet levende architectuur die de omgeving kan  
‘genezen’.

* Tobie Kerridge (UK, Material Beliefs) /  Material Beliefs is een  
project van ontwerpers en wetenschappers die implicaties van opkomende  
biomedische en cybernetische technologieën onderzoeken. Samen met niet- 
specialisten, maken ze prototypes van nieuwe producten en  
tentoonstellingen waarmee wetenschappelijk onderzoek uit laboratoria  
de publieke ruimte in komt.

* Elio Caccavale (Bioethics Futures) / Aan de hand van Utility Pets,  
MyBio en Future Families presenteert Caccavale zijn ontwerppraktijk.  
Caccavale maakt abstracte issues en ethische kwesties rondom bio- 
technologie tastbaar in speculatieve objecten.

* Koert van Mensvoort (NL, NextNature)  /  Koert bericht over de  
laatste inzichten uit het NextNature onderzoek - een zeer inspirerend  
Nederlands initiatief dat verkent en beschrijft hoe ons begrip van  
natuur verandert. NextNature is de natuur die door mensen wordt  
gemaakt en die meer dan ooit wild en onvoorspelbaar is.

* Jan Jongert (2010Architecten in SuperUse) /  Het werk van  
2012Architecten is een sterk voorbeeld van Superuse - een  
ontwerpbenadering waarin slimme esthetiek met de pragmatiek van  
recycling wordt gecombineerd. In plaats van nieuwe cradle-to-cradle  
producten te ontwerpen ontwikkelt 2012Architects een grave-to-cradle  
methode waarmee 'afval' als economische en culturele categorie wordt  
afgeschaft.


Middag - masterclasses:

* Protocells, living buildings and synthetic ecology / Architect,  
fysicus en sciencefictionauteur Dr. Rachel Armstrong leidt de  
deelnemers door de conceptuele en chemische stappen van het maken van  
een niet-organische Traube Cel. Aan de hand van bestaande technologie  
bedenken de deelnemers scenario's voor de inzet van metabolische  
materialen in gebouwen. Hoe kan architectuur letterlijk tot leven komen?

* Material Beliefs / Design-onderzoeker Tobie Kerridge en  
productontwerper Elio Caccavale ontwerpen met de deelnemers producten  
en diensten waarmee ze de sociale, culturele en ethische implicaties  
ervaarbaar maken van opkomende nano- bio- en info-technologie. Wat is  
je gevaarlijkste idee?

* Superusable materials / Architect Jan Jongert leidt een ontwerp  
masterclass over Superusable materialen, die geschikt zijn voor twee  
of meer productcycli. De deelnemers onderzoeken materiaaleisen, maar  
ook de vereiste mentaliteit van de ontwerper, en denken mee over  
alternatieve product- en afval cycli die Superusability kunnen  
ondersteunen.

Transnatural symposium
Saturday 13 March, de Verdieping TrouwAmsterdam

Multiplex Transnatural is the first of two exhibitions with symposia.  
Transnatural will show to young and old the most interesting attempts  
from art, design, and science to fuse technology with nature. A  
glimpse of a new and rich world with transnatural architecture,  
installations, games and more.

Nature has always been complete, and yet it is never finished.  
Technology can expand nature infinitely, but should learn to play by  
some of the same rules. At the Transnatural symposium acknowledged  
designers, scientists, artists and architects explore the  
philosophical, cultural and practical implications of the fusion  
between technology and nature.


Morning lectures:

* Dr. Rachel Armstrong (UK) / Her research is aimed at developing  
metabolic materials to be applied in the built environment. Armstrong  
foresees a living architecture, capable of 'healing' the environment.

* Tobie Kerridge (Material Beliefs) / Material Beliefs is a project of  
designers and scientists that research the implications of upcoming  
biomedical and cybernetic technologies.

* Elio Caccavale (UK) / Drawing on Utility Pets, MyBio and Future  
Families, Caccavale presents his design practice. Caccavale makes  
speculative objects in which abstract issues and ethical questions  
that surround biotechnology are made tangible.

* Koert van Mensvoort (NL) / Koert reports on the latest insights from  
the NextNature research - a highly inspiring Dutch initiative that  
explores and describes how our understanding of nature is changing  
NextNature is the nature made by humans, that is more than ever wild  
and unpredictable.

* Jan Jongert (2012Architecten in SuperUse) / The work of  
2012Architects is a strong example of SuperUse - a design approach in  
which clever aesthetics meet the pragmatics of recycling. Instead of  
designing new cradle-to-cradle products, 2012Architects develop grave- 
to-cradle methods, that do away with 'waste' as an economical and  
cultural category.


Afternoon - masterclasses:

* Protocells, living buildings and synthetic ecology / Architect,  
physicist and sciencefiction author Dr. Rachel Armstrong leads the  
participants along the conceptual and chemical steps of making an in- 
organic Traube Cell. Starting from current technologies, the  
participants develop scenario's to implement metabolic materials in  
the built environment. How can archictecture literally come to live?

* Material Beliefs / Design researcher Tobie Kerridge and product  
designer Elio Caccavale together with the participants develop  
products and services to experience the social, cultural and ethical  
implications of upcoming nano-, bio- and info technologies. What is  
your most dangerous idea?

* Superusable materials / Architect Jan Jongert leads a design  
masterclass about superusable materials, that can live through two or  
more product cycles. The participants research material requirements,  
but also look into the necessary design attitudes, and they think  
about alternative product and waste cycles that can support  
Superusability.
