Het ElectroSmog festival ontwikkelt een kritiek op de wereldwijde explosie van mobiliteit en een verkenning van de nieuwe vormen van verbondenheid met anderen die netwerk- en communicatietechnologieën ons bieden. De hoofdvraag is of deze nieuwe vormen van on-line verbondenheid ons kunnen helpen om een nieuwe levensstijl te ontwikkelen die minder wordt beheerst door snelheid en continue mobiliteit en daardoor zowel ecologisch als sociaal duurzamer is. 

De vorm van het festival is één mogelijk antwoord op deze vraag. Basisregel van het festival is dat niemand voorbij de eigen regionale grenzen mag reizen en alle internationale uitwisselingen via on-line verbindingen tot stand worden gebracht. Het festival biedt een veelzijdig programma met kunstprojecten van ondermeer Bureau des Etudes, Karen Lancel en Hermen Maat, Costas Bissas, Esther Polak, Jon Cors en Kai-Oi Jay Yung, Sean Kerr, Kevin McCourt, live performances, screenings, boek en project-presentaties en een reeks internationaal verbonden discussies met deelnemers verspreid over 5 continenten en 20 uur tijdsverschil.

De Balie in Amsterdam is de initiator van het ElectroSmog festival en de centrale node in dit omvangrijke internationale netwerk. Het doel is een lokaal intiem festival te organiseren dat zichzelf verbindt, voortplant en vermenigvuldigt via de diverse deelnemende locaties. Het festival is tevens in het geheel via internet te volgen, waar het publiek actief kan bijdragen aan discussies, live uitzendingen kan volgen, of via virtuele theaters in second life aan het festival kan deelnemen.

ElectroSmog brengt een brede coalitie van ontwerpers, planners, denkers, kunstenaars en doeners bijeen. Aan hen de opdracht om die grote belofte van het informatietijdperk, verbonden zijn zonder te reizen, kritisch tegen het licht te houden en de vele nieuwe vraagstukken op te zoeken die met het on-line leven verbonden zijn.

The ElectroSmog festival is a critique of the worldwide explosion of mobility, and an exploration of the new forms of connectedness with others offered to us by network and communication technologies. Our question is if these new forms of connectedness can help us to develop a viable new lifestyle less determined by speed and constant mobility, which is both ecologically and socially more sustainable.

The format of ElectroSmog is one possible answer to this question: the festival is a collaborative project developed by a network of organisations and initiatives spread over more than ten countries and 5 continents, for which no one is allowed to travel and all connections are established on-line, redefining the idea of an international festival from the ground up. ElectroSmog offers a diverse program with art projects by among others  Bureau des Etudes, Karen Lancel en Hermen Maat, Costas Bissas, Esther Polak, Jon Cors en Kai-Oi Jay Yung, Sean Kerr, Kevin McCourt, live performances, screenings, book and project-presentations, and a series of live connected discussions with particpants from 5 continents, covering a time-difference of 20 hours.

The festival can be followed on-line in its entirety, where audiences can actively contribute to discussions, follow live webcasts, or alternatively can participate via virtual theatres set up in second life. 

The ElectroSmog festival brings together a broad coalition of designers, environmentalists, urban and spatial planners, technologists, artists, theorists, and engaged and concerned citizens, to explore and ‘design’ sustainable immobility.
