----- Forwarded message from Carl Guderian ----- Date: Tue, 07 Sep 1999 14:57:55 +0200 From: Carl Guderian <carlg@vermilion-sands.com> Decoder (1983) is a German movie starring F.M. Einheit, of the German noise band Einstuerzende Neubauten, as an anti-muzak producer who causes riots by playing tape-recorded riot (shouts, police whistles, etc) sounds in dense city crowds. Other music is by Throbbing Gristle and ENB. It's based partly on "Electronic Revolution," by U.S writer William Burroughs, which says that language and electronic communications (especially MUZAK) are technologies of centralized control, and there are ways to disrupt, examine, and subvert them. The movie features jump-cuts and other non-linear camera techniques later popularized in MTV. 87 minutes. (background) The movie is part of the Industrial Culture movement of the 1970s and '80s, a group of artists, musicians and writers who saw increasing programming of society and individuals. Some of the musicians involved (such as Cabaret Voltaire & Throbbing Gristle/Psychick TV) were later part of the ambient and acid house scenes. Part of the Industrial movement was subsumed into the cyberpunk scene, thanks to magazines like Mondo2000 and FringeWare Review. Some Industrial tenets like centralized control of media seem quaint in the age of the decentralized internet, but if you look at news of censorship, national picture databases, ECHELON, etc., you'll see the issues haven't really gone away. La Jetee (1962) is a short French movie that inspired Terry Gilliam's 1996 movie "12 Monkeys." After a nuclear war, a man is sent back in time for food, supplies, and maybe a way to save the survivors of the future. The movie is shot in black and white and uses still photos. 28 minutes. I saw 12 Monkeys last week and liked it, so I plan to see the orginal Your anti-Hollywood gossip reporter ----(original posting)----- > From: verm@squat.dhs.org > > To all people interested in ASCII, the Amsterdam Squat Internet Workspace: > > ASCII presents: > > Friday the 10th of september, 21:30: > > NIGHT OF THE SILVER SCREEN > > Decoder > la jetee > > ASCII > Herengracht 243a > Amsterdam > http://squat.net/ascii ----- End of forwarded message from Carl Guderian ----- -- * Verspreid via nettime-nl.
