The purpose of these Fellowships is to provide younger scholars with free time to further their own work in a cross-disciplinary setting. Two Fellows will be appointed for the whole academic year, 2002-2003, and will be awarded a stipend plus a small research grant. He or she will teach one undergraduate course each semester; participate in the work of the Center, and give one public lecture. The theme for the year 2002-2003 is "Art in a Time of Catastrophe," a theme broadly conceived to draw a range of applications from scholars and artists interested in ways that the arts are impacted by catastrophe and what they can say to a society dealing with catastrophe. We expect the applicant to have some special need for the resources here in Pittsburgh or the resources at Carnegie Mellon University. Large pharmaceutical company and international exhibit company request slides from artists that suffer from migraine headaches. Clinicians who have migraines are also invited to submit. All visual art mediums will be considered from 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional and new media (no performance art). Slides will be reviewed by experienced art consultants and 6-12 artists will be selected for commissioned works that illustrate the artists' migraine experience. Selected artists will be notified by February 11, 2002. Final artwork will need to be completed by the end of March 2002. Artwork will be used in an exhibit booth on an international tour. Artwork may also be used in patient brochures, calendars and other promotional materials. All commissioned artwork will become the property of the pharmaceutical company, with all rights being transferred to that company. Each selected artist will receive a contract outlining those details. The commission amount will be $10,000 per piece, including shipping.
