Daniel Knorr at The Project, January 13-February 3, 2002 Opening reception Sunday, January 13, 2-6 PM > The Project is pleased to announce the first U.S. solo exhibition of Berlin conceptual artist Daniel Knorr. For his show at the Project, Knorr pays homage to seminal artists Duchamp, Kaprow and Warhol by transfiguring ordinary objects and activities within a gallery space. Knorr will present "Klaus, Klaus comes by foot", an installation with a museum guard named Klaus from Berlin as its subject. Klaus will live in a makeshift apartment on the second floor of the gallery, with a wall dividing him from viewers and the rest of the gallery space. The installation affords viewers questionable interaction with the work since they are only permitted entrance to the private living space when invited by its inhabitant, thereby making interaction with the work dependent upon its subject. > The simultaneously elusive and interactive nature of the work challenges the esoteric nature of the typical gallery experience. Instituting a denial of the object, of placing actual people in artist choreographed "Happenings," the materiality of art is challenged and the boundaries between theater, performance, and ordinary life are blurred. The relationship between art and life is further complicated by recent developments in contemporary science and technology where the distinctions between virtual and natural space >become slippery. Knorr tests these areas of public, private, natural and artificial space while examining the connections between artist, audience and subject and demonstrates that it remains a rich field for exploration. > Daniel Knorr has had solo shows at the Serge Ziegler Galerie and the Centre d'Art Contemporain in Switzerland, as well at the Kuntsforum Lenbachhaus and Akademiegalerie in Munich. Past group exhibitions include "Space Co-Opted" at Andrew Kreps Gallery in New York, "LISTE 2000" in Basel, "Hey International Competition Style," in TENT Rotterdam, "On the spot," in Bern, and "Update," in Kopenhagen. > The Project is located at 427 West 126th Street, between Morningside and Amsterdam Avenues.
