hello all,

hope you are fine.

here i would like to tell you that Kazunao Abe and me, both worked
as co-curators of Canon ARTLAB since 1990, have left ARTLAB at
the end of july and started totally free-based activities this month.

ARTLAB(moved to Canon Inc.'s HQ), might go on(at least for a while)
but don't know what happens for the future without any curators.

the reason is: the top of ARTLAB section has replaced and the
new person("sales-promotion"oriented) did not understand our
direction at all. Abe and i think we have done enough at ARTLAB,
and just hoping Canon will take responsibility to keep the ARTLAB's
archives accessible at CAST site(www.canon.co.jp/cast/) for future.

Abe and i keep on working for the future showing possibilities of
works produced by ARTLAB independently, i.e., for "polar"by carsten
nicolai+marko peljhan(the last original production by ARTLAB, 2000);
(the work is best 3 of prix ars, interactive art category this year, and
will be partly shown at ars electronica soon).

even the time "companies supported media arts"(company-driven,
tokyo-based) in 90s looks over, it doesn't mean that media art and
institution is getting weaker, rather, the scene is shifting to more
diffused, diversed one. for example in japan, there came many art &
media dept. in art universities, more communication with contemporary
art people, some local cities planning to have media centers, and i
hope i would keep on getting involved the scene.

at the moment i am working for several projects , ISEA 2002(nagoya),
YARD(Yamaguchi Art Development and Research) center, located in
yamaguchi city(west part of japan) to open 2003 autumn, shiseido
CyGnet, etc., also teaching at some art universities.

i will be in linz from sept.2-4, so hope to see some of you soon again!
