Date: Sat, 22 May 1999 17:44:27 +0200 (CEST) Last night, Amsterdam celibrated the opening of the Squatters Internet Cafe Ascii with a packed, exciting party. This fresh initiative is located in a beautiful cornerhouse along one the canals, Herengracht 243a, behind Dam Palace. It was squattered last January and looks pretty much like a ruin, but one with history, dating back to the 17th century, a mysterious facade with a statue on top of the entrance... The group collected some 386s and 486, got a cable modem leased line via A2000 (rather cheap these days) and is still looking for more used hardware. Ascii mainly aims at the (technophobic?) radical movements in the city, and will not only provide public access but will also develop new content on the already existing squat homepage and its own. Finally. After so many years, a decade perhaps, there is a computer network group in this town, being part of squatters movement, open to the general public, dedicated to passionate tinkering, and most of all: free of charge! In the next weeks Ascii is going to open on thursdays, fridays and saturdays, from 12-19 hours. e-mail: ascii@theseus.dhs.org http://theseus.dhs.org/ascii geert --- # distributed via nettime-l : no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a closed moderated mailinglist for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: majordomo@desk.nl and "info nettime-l" in the msg body # URL: http://www.desk.nl/~nettime/ contact: nettime-owner@desk.nl ------Syndicate mailinglist-------------------- Syndicate network for media culture and media art information and archive: http://www.v2.nl/syndicate to unsubscribe, write to <syndicate-request@aec.at> in the body of the msg: unsubscribe your@email.adress
