[Nettime-bold] World Trade Center - laser sculpture memorial - slightcorrection... |
Two artists, Julian Laverdiere and Paul Myoda, are doing a project on the World Trade Center disaster, and they've been commissioned to build the memorial that will stand where the towers once stood. Julian did the cover of the New York Times magazine last week, and it had a preliminary portrait of what the memorial will look like. Two NY architects, Gustavo Bonevardi and John Bennett, will have a virtual re-creation of the towers that will encompass lasers operating in a sequential field approximating the size of the towers that will shine over the New York Skyline. It's reminiscent of a series of projects a friend of mine who passed away recently, a composer named Iannis Xenakis, did a long while ago to show how history and science can be used to evoke new ways of thinking about culture and human progress. I think that he would see this project as a way of using mathematics, science, and art, to create and re-build in the face of total devastation. It's an amazing project that's called "Phantom Towers" in the NY Times piece, but it will be called "Towers of Light" upon completion. For the moment though, it's still hypothetical...
