Title: Annette Weintraub, Mirage
Mirage
Mirage is a Web-based narrative project that examines the
dissonance between the romantic expectations of travel and the
realities of place. Based on a journey to Morocco, Mirage
embeds ostensibly neutral 'tourist' photos with contradictory
narratives exposing a complex of economic, social, historical and
psychological realities. Mirage addresses the complex
relationship of experience and expectation, examining elements of
voyerism, escapism, cultural confusion and mythification. It presents
alternative interpretations of the signature visuals of an
"exotic" place, and the resultant tensions between
expectation and actuality.
Mirage is at: http://cepa.buffnet.net/exhibits/EXHIBIT.2001/Paradise2/p10.html. This project was commissioned for
the exhibition, "Paradise in Search of a Future, Part II"
at CEPA in Buffalo.
