Re: <nettime> It's Time to Fight for Open Source Again (fwd) |
Thanks, this is very important. But it omits to specifically mention one of the biggest obstacles that open source AI faces, which is the same obstacle that faces those fighting to save end-to-end encryption: the "think of the children" trump card. The disgust that people feel when they think about generative AI being used to generate sexualized images of children is being utilized to drive the regulation of open source AI. I wrote a little about this here, though there have been some new developments since then, including 50 U.S. Attorneys General and the UK's Internet Watch Foundation both calling for bans on open source AI to protect (virtual) children: https://jere.my/generative-ai-and-children-prioritizing-harm-prevention/. -- Jeremy Malcolm https://jere.my -- # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: https://www.nettime.org # contact: nettime-l-owner@lists.nettime.org
